Mom Posts Terrifying Nursery Rhyme About Active Shooters

You might never hear the song “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” the same again after seeing an image of a kindergarten classroom’s lockdown procedure set to the memorable tune. It’s yet another sad reminder of a new reality in which even the youngest members of American society have to grapple with the idea that they might not be safe from a mass shooter, even at school.

The poster, which was hanging in a Boston kindergarten classroom, reads:

“Lockdown, lockdown

Lock the door

Shut the lights of

Say no more

Go behind the desk and hide

Wait until it’s safe inside

Lockdown, lockdown

It’s all done

Now it’s time to have some fun!”

The image was shared by Georgy Cohen, after she saw it while visiting a prospective classroom for her daughter. While Cohen was aware of the dreadful situation that the picture represents, her daughter was elated by the idea that the drill could be “a game to see if you can stay quiet for ‘one whole minute.”

While this is the probably the first time anyone has ever set an active shooter drill to a nursery rhyme, it’s far from the first time a school has gone out of its way to prepare students for a school shooting. Companies like ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) already go from school to school helping craft security plans and evacuation procedures should a shooter open fire on campus. One Pennsylvania school is arming students with rocks, because apparently, that’s a good way to defend yourself against someone with a semi-automatic rifle. Oh yeah, and there are also the people making cash selling door stoppers and bulletproof backpacks to scared parents. Beyond that. Nine out of ten public schools have some kind of active shooter drill in place.
