Sounding Out Words

One simple activity that little learners need to work on repeatedly is sounding out real and nonsense words. Since students need to do this often, changing the theme is a great way to engage learners.

Check out how simple this new and engaging valentine math activity is to play. First, students choose a mat and grab their color coded heart vowels. Next, they lay out their vowels and sound out the words. Some of the words will be real while others are nonsense words. I encourage my learners to state sentences with that word in it, if it is a real word.

Are you ready for more new and engaging Valentine activities? You will love this love letter themed CVC word writing activity. It has built in differentiation with the color coded vowel sheets. Students can work on short a, e, i, o, or u words. Or you can mix and match based on what your students need.

For this learning activity, student see the CVC word picture. Then, they must write in the first and last sound to make the word. If you laminate the pages and provide a dry erase marker, students can enjoy this learning activity with ease over time.

Counting Valentine Activity

If I am being honest, this is my favorite engaging learning activity for this theme. Check out adorable jar of hearts themed math activity. To play, students grab their mats and pieces. Next, they count the hearts in each jar and match it to the number on the mat. Pieces are color coded for student use and easy clean up.

Comparing Numbers Fun

Another skill my student need to practice consistently is comparing numbers. To help keep this skill in our rotation, we bring in a big of novelty and excitement like with this game. To play, students count the hearts on the left and the hearts on the right. Then, they write the number in the box on each side. Finally, students write their comparing symbols in the middle.
