Toddler Month by Month: 29

Hi everyone and welcome to Month 29 with your baby and Month 29 with my toddler Bracey.

How Old is a 29-Month-Old Toddler?

Your toddler is now 2 years and 5 months old. In one month, your toddler will be 2 years and 6 months old or 2 ½. Unbelievable, right?

29 Month Old Toddler Developmental Milestones

29-Month-Old Toddler Speech Milestones

What’s typical for a 29-month-old when it comes to speech and language? By this age, most toddlers can:

  • Say between 50 and 100 words
  • Utter 2- to 4-word phrases, and utter increasing arrays of 2-word phrases
  • Describe what they are doing
  • Follow simple instructions
  • Point to objects you mention
  • Blabber with increasing clarity (don’t worry too much if you don’t understand a lot of what your toddler says)
  • Imitate the words you utter.

How Can I Teach my Toddler to Speak

When your child says something inaccurate, imprecise or not grammatical, repeat the phrase again properly. Toddlers learn to speak through imitating what they hear. You might find your toddler skipping the verbs alot, saying things like “Bracey bike” versus “Bracey rides his bike.” Try to fill in the verbs and the missing words to give your toddler a complete sentence to repeat. A 29-month-old who is not talking should get an evaluation from the pediatrician.

How to Promote your 29-Month-Old Toddler Speech?

Try to delight in language, in words. Make language and speaking fun. Start by intonating words.

  • Say your child’s name in different ways, at different speeds, and with different intonations
  • Make happy, playful expressions while you speak to your child
  • Read the same books again and again. You might get slightly bored but the repetition of images paired with words is great for your toddler.
  • Say your child’s name (and that of other family members) while clapping.
  • Play “That’s a” .. Go around the house stating what objects are while pointing to them: “that’s a … mop” … “that’s a … pillow” … “that’s a … plate.”

Try to make speaking and vocabulary a fun game that your toddler wants to be a part of.

Physical Activities for a 29-Month-Old Toddler

Your toddler should be getting increasingly agile and strong as their gross motor skills develop. Encourage activity – moving, walking, jumping, dancing, playing – and discourage watching TV, sitting in the stroller or car seat for long periods of time, and using iPhones, iPads or computers. Books, playing inside and outside, and using educational toys and materials are better activities for your child at this stage. You want to encourage active versus passive learning.

Intellectual Activities for a 29-Month-Old-Toddler

Continue with blocks, play doh, small manipulatives, and card games. Your toddler’s grasp of a pencil or paintbrush, although primitive, should be getting more steady. Invest in an easel or tape a big piece of paper up on the wall and encourage your toddler to draw, paint and scribble on the paper. You’ll end up with a Jackson Pollack-like piece of art work, and your toddler will take pride in his creative endeavor, while strengthening his fine motor skills.

Give your toddler a wide variety of foods from the basic food groups. For a comprehensive look at great food to give toddlers this age, check out Month 27.

Schedule for Breastfeeding or Milk Feeding Babies at 29 Months of Age

Follow the same schedule as during prior months. Your toddler will need about 12.5-14 hours of sleep over a 24 hour period. That means 11-12 hours at night and a 1.5-3 hours nap. Bracey sleeps 13-15 hours a day, 11-12 hours at night with a nap of 2-3 hours.

  • 7am feed* & breakfast
  • 10am snack
  • 12pm feed & lunch (1-3pm sleep)
  • 3pm feed & snack
  • 6pm dinner
  • 7:30 pm final milk feeding
  • 8pm bedtime

*Start the schedule when your toddler wakes up. If you are no longer breastfeeding, give milk or its alternative after the meal.

Bracey update

During his 29th month, Bracey continued to enjoy art activities at home and playing outdoors and inside. Playing at home with his siblings was his favorite pastime. Thanks for watching and see you back soon for Month 30.
