10 Great Bottles of Whiskey That Make Excellent Father’s Day Gifts
On Father’s Day, you should take a moment to remember all those bottles of liquor you raided from your parents liquor cabinet? Uh-huh. And chances are you didn’t just take the Kahlua, and snapped up whatever you could, not knowing that dad was saving that 25-year-old Scotch in the back for something a little more special than a high school rager at the moon tower. While we don’t condone under-age drinking, or stealing for that matter, boosting the the parental booze is a rite of passage for most and one easily forgiven. But we’re betting that as a teenager you and your your weren’t sophisticated enough to appreciate dad’s Macallan neat and it ended up in a plastic red cup full of Coca-Cola. And for that we hope you feel a sufficient measure of guilt.
So, this Father’s Day, it’s time to make a amends by giving dad a little restock. A great bottle of whiskey is something he’ll appreciate it and it will give you an opportunity to confess your crimes. Perhaps he’ll even share a glass with you… willingly this time.
Henry McKenna Single Barrel Bourbon
Once an under the radar bottle, Henry McKenna Single Barrel is now one most bourbon aficionados look for. If your dad is a fan of the Kentucky spirit and you can find a bottle, he will certainly be stoked. It spends 10 years in oak and is bottled at 100 proof, which makes it rich and flavorful with a long finish that beckons another glass.
Knappogue Castle 16 Year Single Malt
If your dad favors the Irish, this single malt spends its first 14 years in ex-bourbon casks and then completes the aging process Oloroso sherry wood. The result is a deliciously balanced dram with nutty notes and a fruity sweetness that pops will dig.
Nikka
Finding your father a decent bottle of Japanese whisky can be a little bit of a quest, but Nikka From the Barrel is a solid option. This 103 proof blend is big flavorful whisky at a quite reasonable price point. Toffee, fruit and spice swirl around a big, pleasant dose of heat from the higher alcohol content.
Stranahan’s Sherry Cask Single Malt
For the dad that’s into the burgeoning American single malt scene, we like Stranahan’s Sherry Cask Single Malt. It’s a four-year-old juice that gets transferred to 40-year-old Oloroso sherry casks for an additional spell. The result is rich, flavorful dram with a fruity sweetness that balances nicely with flavors of salt and leather.
The Macallan 12 Sherry Oak Cask
This Speyside icon is a classic gift that will be sure to bring a smile to any Scotch-drinking dad’s face, The whisky ages for a dozen years in Spanish Sherry casks sourced from bodegas in Jerez giving it lovely notes of oak, fruit, and spice as well as a sweetness that makes it eminently approachable, even for whisky noobs.
GlenDronach 18
If someone is looking to share a gift with us, GlenDronach 18 is a bottle we’d love to see a bow on. Every glass evokes the warmth of a great, well-worn club chair. It’s soft and rich, with notes full of wood, leather, tobacco, and a finish that keeps you cozy well into the night.

At any given moment at our local shop, there are a few editions of Booker’s on the shelf. But no matter what’s available at yours its a great gift option for dad. Every release is a special bourbon, sure to please with rich vanilla and wood leading the mouth to a happy place.
Knob Creek Cask Strength Rye
While not every store carries Knob Creek Cask Strength Rye, it’s not hard to find but this whiskey is crazy good and if dad like’s rye, you need to track down a bottle. It’s rich mouthful with spicy, peppery notes playing off a deeply satisfying caramel sweetness. And since its a cask strength 119.6 proof, this Knob Creek has a serious undiluted flavor that waltzes beautifully along the tastebuds.
Glenmorangie Signet
If you feel like dining deep for da this year, Glenmorangie Signet is a real treat. A deep amber in color, this whisky is beautifully complex thanks in part to the roasted chocolate barley used in the distilling process. After a lengthy time maturing in virgin American oak, the result is flawless and like all great whisky there is something new to discover in every dram.
Michter’s Unblended American Whiskey
Want to teach dad a lesson? Give him a bottle of Michter’s Unblended American Whiskey and when he asks what the hell ‘unblended American whiskey’ is you can drop a little knowledge. While it’s to bourbon, Michter’s doesn’t call it that, because it can’t. The juice is aged in whiskey-soaked (used barrels) rather than new-charred oak, a requirement to meet the definition of bourbon. But a rose by any other name. It’s a rich luscious whiskey with intense notes butterscotch, vanilla, dried fruit and a hint of mint.
