When it comes to food, we set out with a couple goals in 2020:
1. Cook from home more.
2. Reduce our food and packaging waste

It’s a learning process to be sure, but we’ve been fortunate to be aided by businesses like the new Spice & Tea Exchange at Polaris Fashion Place.

Places like the Spice & Tea Exchange help supplement and enhance your home-cooking with spices and specialty blends, AND… they let you bring in your own containers to fill with tea, sugars, salts, spices, and other mixes. Beth has been diligently organizing our spice cabinet, in order to better use ingredients, and having places like this that let you refill existing containers helps minimize our waste.

The Columbus franchise of the Spice & Tea Exchange opened a few months ago. It’s owned by Thurston and Jackie Collins. Thurston currently works for the U.S. Navy in recruitment, and while they’ve moved around quite a bit, the duo had wanted to settle down and open their own business. After encountering other locations of the Spice & Tea Exchange across the country, they decided to open the first store in Ohio.

You can find them on the main floor of Polaris Fashion Place, between Saks Fifth Avenue and JCPenney.

As you can imagine, the selection is wide and varied. Fortunately, Jackie, Thurston, and their team are very adept at helping you find the right seasoning for gifts, home cooking, you name it.

They have whole sections dedicated to different types of peppers…

…and flavored sugars. It was fun to browse and smell our way through. We imagined the different uses in baking and cooking for the sugars.

The same goes for the salts of varying origins and flavors.

As the name implies, they feature a huge collection of teas from around the world. You name it, they had it: green, black, and white tea; Earl Grey; darjeeling; yerba mate; rooibos.

They also sell tea blends, gift sets, and brewing equipment.

They can help you assemble spices into gift packs, or they have pre-made collections. You’ll find bundles of spices, pre-filled grinders, brewing and grinding equipment, even soy candles and other accessories.

Feeling thirsty? The Spice & Tea Exchange also serves any of their teas to order, hot or cold!

Thurston and Jackie were kind enough to share some of their spices, salts, and sugars with us, and we’ve had fun enhancing our home cooking with them.

We supplemented a dinner of black beans, rice, and six-minute eggs with their Pirate’s Bite, a blend with sea salt, black and white peppercorns, chipotle peppers, cayenne, habanero, Scotch Bonnets, and other spices.

Beth whipped up compound butters using different spice blends. The Black Truffle Garlic has especially been a favorite.

Just imagine the earthy fragrance of the black truffle butter when you spread it over a warm slice of fresh-baked bread, then dip it in split pea soup.

We’ve even had fun tinkering with different salts on our avocado toast with over easy eggs.

It was warm enough last weekend that I wanted to fire up the grill, and their Tuscany spice blend came in handy while grilling vegetables.
