Our latest homemade seasoning recipe is a spicy and authentic Homemade Montreal Steak Seasoning which will help you add amazing flavor to much more than just steaks!
Montreal Steak Seasoning Recipe
Montreal Steak Spice originated as a pickle seasoning of all of things before being adapted for the famous Schwartz Montreal smoked meat. (Their sandwiches are amazing and well worth the line-up – we included in in our must-eat Montreal post.)
Over time, the spice blend started to be used on steaks and it’s been a BBQ and steakhouse staple ever since!
It adds undeniable flavor to everything from steaks to grilled chicken and even grilled veggies, but pre-made mixes can sometimes contain way too much salt or preservatives that we’d prefer to stay away from. Our homemade Montreal Steak Seasoning allows you to customize your seasoning blend to your own personal preferences and avoid the unnecessary additives found in commercial blends.
It makes a delicious addition to your spice cabinet or a great homemade gift for the BBQ or steak lover in your life. I think it would be super cute in a little grilling basket with a couple of other BBQ essentials as a birthday, host or housewarming gift.
The best cost savings with this recipe is to purchase your spices from a bulk store, or if that’s not an option, buy the large containers of the individual spices and herbs. Buying the little containers to make this seasoning would be crazy expensive (but ironically, still cheaper than using the seasoning packets).
This homemade Montreal steak seasoning is shelf-stable for up to a year, as long as you use fresh (dried) herbs and spices when you make it and store in a cool, dry spot in your kitchen.
This seasoning is gluten-free, paleo, low-carb and vegan and makes a great homemade gift.
What is Montreal steak seasoning? Our Montreal steak seasoning is made with black pepper, kosher salt, sweet paprika, garlic flakes, onion flakes, dill seeds, mustard seeds, coriander, and cayenne pepper.
Is Montreal steak seasoning spicy? That is completely up to you! Montreal steak seasoning should definitely add some warmth and flavor, but you can control the heat in your homemade seasoning to either avoiding making it too spicy or really amp up the heat.
