We consider ourselves organizing experts, but cooking experts? Not quite

However, we’ve found that the two often go hand in hand!

Did you know there is actually a French culinary concept of “mise en place” or having “everything in its place”? Basically….when you know what you have on-hand and where it is, you’re more likely to use it and use it properly. Hmmmm….sounds familiar!

That’s why this holiday season, we’re partnering with the Flavor App powered by McCormick to showcase how merging the gap between traditional and digital organization can help streamline an entire kitchen routine.

One of our favorite things about this app is its ability to digitally organize your pantry. All you do is scan in your spices and ingredients, and voila! Your pantry is online and easy to access from anywhere.

Along with learning about the app and using it to help get ourselves holiday-ready, we partnered with McCormick to offer you our best tips on spice-specific organizing. Check them out!

Tip #1: Clean out your spice cabinet once, maybe twice a year. Daylight Savings Time is a perfect reminder.

Tip #2: Know how fresh your spices are. McCormick products include a “best by” date on the packaging. You can also give it a quick sniff test to make sure the spice is still aromatic.

Tip #3: Display your spices on a tiered rack (like ours here!), so you can see labels clearly. Keep your favorites front-and-center and rotate in others occasionally to remind yourself what you have

Tip #4: Alphabetize the rest of your spices so that you can find them when prepping for new recipes.

Tip #5: Keep baking spices, extracts, and food color in a separate bin or area of the pantry, so they’ll be easy to find when you need them.

Tip #6: Store spices away from extreme heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. They should not be kept above the stove, and caps should be securely tightened to keep them fresh!

And to top it all off, the McCormick Kitchens even helped us design our very own recipe: The Home Edit’s Gingerbread Brownies with Eggnog Frosting. It includes all our favorite things – and it’s easy to make based off a boxed brownie mix! Check it out, along with other The Home Edit exclusive content and promo code, on the Flavor Maker App by McCormick, available for free on iOS & Android.
